Laptop or iPad, that is the question

There is an excellent article by James Tanner on the FamilySearch "Tech Tips" blog  that brings up a question I have been pondering:  should I take a laptop or an iPad to Rootstech?   Please note that I  don't currently own either one.  But if I did, which would be more useful?  I'm leaning toward a laptop simply because of the keyboard but I would love some input on this question.  Help!

  1. I would go with a laptop if that meets your comfort level. One thing to remember about the iPad - I don't believe it will run Flash applications which many sites use. There are however other tablet PCs out there that mimic the ipad and run Flash.

  2. Welcome to the GeneaBloggers family. Hope you find the association fruitful; I sure do. I have found it most stimulating, especially some of the Daily Themes.

May you keep sharing your ancestor stories!

  3. Thomas, thanks for the suggestion. I think the laptop is what I'm leaning toward.
Dr. Bill, Thanks for the comment. Don't you love Geneabloggers?

  4. Yes, I do. Thanks for stopping by my blog. And, I agree with Thomas on the laptop. He is usually right, by the way! ;-) Though an iPad is nice to have, as well. I don't have one, but between two daughters, I think there may be four... ;-)

  6. Hi ~ I'm currently trying very hard NOT to buy an iPad although now I think I need one :-) I would lean toward bringing the iPad but only because I've seen an app that will allow me to remotely log on to my laptop at home as long as it is turned on and connected. The best of both worlds in my mind - iPads are just so cool ;-)

  8. Hi, welcome to the Genealogical Blogging World. Although I'm not new to blogging, I AM new to genealogy and to genealogy blogging. I hope you enjoy being here and that you make some fabulous connections. (I have 2 blogs...one is classic movies, the other is partly genealogy/partly other "beautiful things.")

As for this question, I do not have an IPAD, but I love my laptop.

    Have a wonderful day.

    Blessings to you,
    Patti

  9. Hi Nancy -

Great blog!! I love the look of it:-) I'm also a Mac user - laptop and iPad. Remember, first and foremost, the iPad is a mobile device. So if you need the full functionality of a computer, I'd definitely suggest that you go for the laptop instead.

With that said, I do love my iPad! I spent two days this summer at the New England Genealogical and Historical Society and took my iPad along. It was lightweight and had everything I need to do genealogical research. If you decide on the iPad, pick up a wireless Bluetooth keyboard. It's the necessary accessory - much easier to type on this than the touchpad keyboard you'll get on the iPad.

    Hope this helps:-)

  10. Thanks for the warm welcome everyone! The consensus seems to be towards a laptop.
Diana- loved your comment about trying NOT to buy an iPad. Good luck with that...Apple usually gets me in the end.
    Patti- your blogs are gorgeous!
Karen- yea for another Mac user! I "converted" a couple of years ago and love it.
